During the summer of 2026, I spent eight weeks in Asheville, N.C. providing outreach to communities impacted by Hurricane Helene. During our time, we worked with A Bridge Home foundation and the Beacon Network to reach homeowners impacted by the hurricane. This experience allowed us to apply engineering methods to address challenges in homeowners’ daily lives from the hurricane, from improving drainage with culverts to rebuilding stairs lost due to flooding. It also allowed us to connect with the community on a much deeper level, building impactful relationships that demonstrated how engineering can be used to help those in need.
During our time in Asheville, we did significant local outreach in addition to engineering efforts across Buncombe and Yancy county. Working in remote areas of Asheville, N.C., we...
worked alongside field engineers, assisting with and installing 10+ culverts in flood-prone counties
performed site grading and improved embankment stabilization utilizing vegetative and structural methods for areas that previously experienced flooding
built and stabilized stairs to reopen river access for homeowners reliant on waterways
assisted in community gardens and worked on local fencing projects
These projects not only allowed us to develop our engineering skills but also showed us the impact those skills can have in meaningful solutions for those in need. Being able to meet and understand the homeowners impacted on a deeper level made our work that much more meaningful.
