In the fall semester, I joined Duke Aviator's Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) engineering team. UAV models, designs, and builds model airplanes for recreation and competition. These airplanes contain full structural and propulsion systems intended for full teleoperated control. This team models a Design Build Fly (DBF) team with plans in the 2027 fall semester to become an official DBF team. The DBF website, outlined by the AIAA, can be found here.
Although I joined recently in the fall semester, I have been committed to researching and learning the mechanics behind airplane and propulsion development. As a new and relatively small team, efforts have gone mostly to teaching and researching airplane design from other teams like Georgia Tech and Purdue that compete in DBF.
We have begun developing a test model airplane following similar design to top ranking DBF teams. So far, I have been able to...
research and develop a preliminary electric propulsion system, utlizing a Scorpion SII-4020-420Kv motor
design and build the wing and tail structure of our test model airplane, utilizing laser cutting machines
I look forward to continuing to deveop and test our model airplane, with hopes in becoming a DBF team in the future!
